True Sight restages the scene Thai tradition calls มารผจญ (Māra's assault) painted across temple walls throughout the country. On the night of the awakening, Māra's army rises to drive Siddhattha from his seat beneath the Bodhi tree. The Buddha touches the earth as his witness, and Phra Mae Thorani, the earth goddess, wrings from her hair the water he had poured onto the earth with every past act of merit. The flood carries the army away. What follows, in the next instant, is enlightenment (described in the texts as seeing things as they truly are)

The photograph holds the scene one breath before that seeing. Where the murals give Māra's soldiers faces, armor, and rage, here they are silhouettes adrift inside the wave, dissolving not under force, but together with the delusion that assembled them. The title names what has not yet arrived in the image: the first act of completed perception.
