This series begins in the artist's own nights: recurring dreams for over a decade, in which dark figures come toward him — at the door, beside the bed, close enough to touch — experiences that verge on sleep paralysis. In Thailand the visitation has a name and an owner: phi am (ผีอำ), the spirit that presses down on the sleeper.

Sleep paralysis is perception running with nothing to perceive. Awake enough to see, the mind is offered only darkness and completes it into a presence. These photographs stage that completion halfway: figures assembled out of shadow, backlight, and stained color, arrested before they gain a face. They are portraits less of ghosts than of the faculty that makes them. The same proliferating mind that, by daylight, completes strangers into selves.
